Dimanche 14 décembre

Avant de partir pour sa grande tournée de Noël, le Père Noël fera une escale exceptionnelle à Lyon. Atterrissage prévu à 15h00 pétantes au Johnny’s Kitchen. Pour ceux qui souhaiteraient arriver en avance et manger un morceau les portes seront ouvertes dès 13h00.

La rencontre avec le Père Noël est gratuite. Les parents peuvent apporter un cadeau pour leur enfant, déjà emballé et avec le nom de l’enfant clairement indiqué. Ces cadeaux seront remis à un des lutins avant l’arrivée du Père Noël.

Valeur recommandée du cadeau : maximum 15 à 20€ afin de garantir que l’événement reste accessible à tous.

L’événement est ouvert à tous, Irlandais ou non, et se déroulera principalement en anglais, avec éventuellement quelques mots en gaélique. Le Père Noël pourra également répondre en français… avec son accent du County Down !

Pour des raisons d’organisation, merci de confirmer votre présence avant le jeudi 11 décembre, en précisant le nombre d’enfants présents.

Spend a Sunday afternoon discovering the magic of Christmas in Lyon with a convivial walk combining the Christmas market and Festival of Lights.

Discover the Christmas Market at Place Carnot
Meet at 3pm at the Confluence shopping centre (Lyon 2nd arrondissement). The walk will begin at the Christmas Market at Place Carnot, where chalets offer handcrafted products, culinary specialities and local creations. It’s the perfect opportunity to stroll around, discover regional crafts and soak up the festive atmosphere of the city.

The Festival of Lights: a unique spectacle
After the market, the walk will continue through the illuminated streets of Lyon, transformed for the occasion by the Festival of Lights. The visual and interactive installations offer a luminous journey through the heart of the city, highlighting Lyon’s heritage and providing a spectacular experience for all.

Jeudi 4 décembre

Father Ted est une sitcom écrite par les auteurs irlandais Graham Linehan et Arthur Mathews, diffusée entre 1995 et 1998. La série comprend 25 épisodes répartis sur trois saisons, plus un épisode spécial de Noël. L’histoire se déroule sur l’île fictive de Craggy Island, au large de la côte ouest de l’Irlande.

La série suit les mésaventures de trois prêtres catholiques exilés sur l’île : le père Ted Crilly, le naïf père Dougal McGuire et le grossier père Jack Hackett, accompagnés de leur dévouée gouvernante Mrs Doyle. Envoyés là par l’évêque Len Brennan comme punition pour leurs erreurs passées, ils vivent dans un presbytère chaotique. Sous couvert d’un humour absurde, la série aborde subtilement des thèmes tels que la solitude, l’agnosticisme, l’existentialisme et le purgatoire.

Father Ted a remporté plusieurs British Academy Television Awards et reste une sitcom culte au Royaume-Uni et en Irlande. En 2019, elle a été classée deuxième meilleure sitcom britannique de tous les temps.

Rendez-vous à 19h45 à la Maison des Européens, 5 rue Pizay, Lyon 1. Début de la séance à 20h pile, avec un court-métrage en introduction. S’en suivront quelques discussions autour d’un verre.

Figure emblématique du comté d’Armagh et joueur reconnu sur la scène du football gaélique en Irlande, Rory Grugan consacre dix semaines à une mission pas comme les autres : faire grandir le football gaélique en France – et en français !
Car en dehors du terrain, Rory est aussi professeur de langue française. Un double talent qu’il met aujourd’hui au service de la promotion de ce sport unique mêlant passion, culture et convivialité.

Ce samedi, Rory sera présent au tournoi de football gaélique organisé au Complexe sportif Bachelard de Grenoble, de 10h à 18h. Sur le terrain, s’affronteront des équipes venues de Nice, Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon, Genève, Rome et Grenoble – une belle illustration du dynamisme de ce sport à travers la région.

Le dimanche, place à la découverte culturelle : visite du Vieux Lyon au départ de la Place Bellecour à 14h30, suivie d’un moment convivial au Johnny’s Kitchen, où Rory échangera autour d’un verre avec la communauté irlandaise de la région.

Parce que Rory Grugan porte un projet unique en Europe :
– Coacher le football gaélique en français,
– Former de nouveaux joueurs et entraîneurs,
– Et faire découvrir un sport qui compte déjà plus de 34 clubs et 1 300 licenciés en France !

Mercredi 5 novembre

Up next for the film club is a trip up to Donegal and back to 1936 where Brian Friel set his wonderful 1990 play Dancing at Lughnasa.

This adaptation by Pat O Connor stars Meryl Streep as the alpha female of the five Mundy sisters living together in a small community in the aptly named Ballybeg (‘small town’ in Irish) where many of Friel’s plays are set.

They lead mostly quiet lives interspersed with reminiscing and although the moral order of the Catholic Church holds sway over their lives, there are hints that its hold over them is not complete: the only male in the house is a child born out of wedlock to one of the sisters.

This delicate balance between pagan undercurrents and an overbearing Catholicism is shaken by the appearance of two men into the midst of the matriarchy: first the sisters’ only brother returned from the missions in African and then, Gerry, the father of the wee boy growing up amongst his maiden aunts.

When on top of those intrusions, the march of history stumbles into the sisters’ secluded lives, they have to face the disappearance of a world which had perhaps already been on its last legs.

The film received some good reviews when it came out in 1998 and picked up a number of nominations and one IFTA for best actress. Alongside Streep, Michael Gambon, Kathy Burke and Rhys Ifans appear in this entertaining adaptation of an Irish classic.

Samhain is an ancient Irish festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. Traditionally, Samhain was a time to gather with family, light bonfires, and honor ancestors on October 31st.

Pour notre premier film après la pause estivale, nous avons décidé de vous faire revivre le passé et de vous présenter un documentaire récent de la RTE sur un concours qui semble aujourd’hui complètement dépassé, mais qui n’a pris fin qu’il y a 30 ans : celui de la Femme au foyer irlandaise de l’année. De 1967 à 1995, des Irlandaises ont participé à des épreuves préliminaires à travers tout le pays, qui ont abouti à une finale où six candidates se sont affrontées pour remporter le titre ultime de Femme au foyer de l’année.

À cette époque, les femmes étaient encore très largement définies par leur rôle de « femmes au foyer » et, jusqu’en 1973, une clause d’exclusion du service public signifiait que les femmes devaient abandonner leur emploi lorsqu’elles se mariaient. Ce documentaire revient sur ce passé récent de l’Irlande et sur la façon dont il est perçu aujourd’hui par certaines des personnes qui ont participé au concours.

Réalisé par Ciarán Carson, il a remporté le prix du meilleur documentaire au Galway Film Fleadh et a été très apprécié par les critiques de cinéma.

Our next film will be Nora (2000), directed by Pat Murphy.

Nora is Nora Barnacle, most famous as James Joyce’s muse. Not more bloody men, you might be saying but Nora is a feminist look at these famous lives, from Ireland’s premier feminist director. An award-winning performance from Susan Lynch, with Ewan McGregor and Andrew Scott. We may even think of a Bloomsday apéro ! English only, I’m afraid – no subtitles available (if you find it with subtitles, tell us please).

Our next film on Thursday March 27th at 20.00 will be Bob Quinn’s Poitín (1978), starring Cyril Cusack and Niall Tóibín.

It’s an antidote to the Hollywood view of Ireland, the story of moonshine-makers full of spite and treachery – and without Tinseltown’s awful accents.

It was the first feature-length film in Irish: subtitled in English. This is the AFIL Film Season’s 5th anniversary and to celebrate we have two bottles of poitín smuggled out of the French countryside for you.

The film’s director, Ken Wardrop offers an opportunity to a plethora of Irish women, mainly from the Midlands, to talk about the men in their lives over the course of about 80 minutes. It begins with daughters and runs through the ages of woman giving a voice to girlfriends, wives, mothers and finally widows. The pitch couldn’t be simpler but the film throws up warm and moving moments that are sure to please you and hopefully provoke some conversation also. We unfortunately couldn’t find the movie with French subtitles but we hope that doesn’t turn too many of you off coming. The English is not too difficult to understand, once you get the hang of the Midlands accent.

The Quiet Girl (2022). The film is an adaptation of the wonderful Claire Keegan’s novella, Foster and recounts the journey of the preternaturally quiet Cáit, a nine-year-old girl who goes from a dysfunctional family setting to the warmth of her aunt and uncle’s farm where decency and simplicity seem to reign. Cáit discovers a new world in her new home but as the story progresses, she also learns that the idyllic homestead is haunted by a tragic past. The portrayal of her coming of age and of family, much like Keegan’s writing, is done in a minimalist style highlighting beauty in the everyday and capturing characters with the smallest of brushstrokes. The film switches between English in Cáit’s home and Irish in the “foster home” and is wonderfully filmed. Unlike the more recent adaptation of another Keegan book, Small Things Like These, the film doesn’t contain any stars but the acting is spot on and fits the minimalist approach of the director.

The Association Franco-Irlandaise de Lyon is delighted to announce that the one and only Santa Claus will be making a quick pre-Christmas visit to Lyon! Santa will be available to chat to our youngest local residents in his Lyon grotto (i.e.the cave in Johnny’s Kitchen) on the afternoon of Sunday 15th December.

Johnny’s Kitchen will be open from 12:00pm, we’ll be gathering from about 1:00pm for lunch. Santa is expected to arrive at 3:00pm sharp.

Admission to meet Santa is free, however we would ask that parents bring their own present for their child or children, presents should be pre-wrapped with their child’s name clearly written on it. This will be sneakily handed to one of Santa’s elves prior to the star of the show’s appearance. Please limit the value of presents to a maximum of 10€ so that the event is affordable for everybody. The event is open to all, be they Irish or not, but please note that it is an English speaking event (with maybe a ‘cúpla focal’ in Gaelic as well!). That said, Santa, mighty man that he is, will no doubt be able to handle a few words in French if necessary…..probably in a brutal County Down accent however! 😉

Please confirm if you’d like to attend (and how many children you’ll be bringing) prior to Thursday 12th December.

Additionally, if you’d like to help out or conbtribute on the day, be you a musician, face-painter, or aspiring elf please don’t hesitate to let us know!

Sing Street (2016) – Maison des Européens, 5 rue Pizay 69001 Lyon à 20h

Another film set in Dublin but a much lighter theme this time round: love and music (although there is a little Catholic oppression on backing vocals). It’s a film made by John Carney (director of Once) and stars Aidan Gillen and Maria Doyle-Kennedy as the parents of Conor Lalor whose life is upended by his family separating and then redeemed when he falls in love with the beautiful and older Raphina who inspires him to form a band. The film, set in the 80s, is full of contemporary classics and should bring a smile to your faces and ears. Drinks and nibbles will be provided as usual after the film. Hope to see you there !

Now firmly establised as our « rentrée » event, the annual picnic will take place on Sunday the 15th of September from 12:30pm.

The venue is close to home for the majority of us; Parc de la Tête d’or. We’ll be meeting at the point shown on the map below. Please note that barbecues are not permitted in the park.

As always, please remember that you don’t have to be Irish to come to our events and French (and indeed miscellaneous!) friends are more than welcome to join us

The Irish Consulate in Lyon has working with James Joyce Association in Saint Gerand le Puy to celebrate Bloomsday. They are putting together a programme on Saturday 22 June in Saint Gerand le Puy. The Consulate is trying to gauge interest from the Irish community in attending the event, that would include a visit to the Joyce Museum there. If there is sufficient interest, the Consulate will get a bus from Lyon to Saint Gerand le Puy and back. 

People could register interest by 27 May at lyon@dfa.ie.

The Consulate will participate in the Fêtes consulaires on 15-16 June on Place Bellecour. This year the theme of the event is Skills and Crafts from our countries. The Consulate is looking for volunteers from the Irish community to help staffing the tent. If you have friends or family members who would like to join, they are more than welcome too! Please let them know at lyon@dfa.ie.

In the Name of the Father (1993) est un film de procès irlando-britannique réalisé par Jim Sheridan. Il s’agit d’une adaptation du livre autobiographique de Gerry Conlon. 
Ce film engagé, qui met en scène la chronique d’une erreur judiciaire, est l’un des plus marquants de la carrière de Jim Sheridan. Il a reçu l’Ours d’Or au Festival de Berlin en 1994 et a été nommé sept fois aux Oscars. Ce film est une critique virulente et sans concession du fonctionnement de la justice britannique lors des vagues d’attentats de l’IRA provisoire dans les années 1970.  Il réunit Daniel Day-Lewis interprétant le rôle de Gerry Conlon, Pete Postlethwaite jouant le rôle du père, Giuseppe Conlon, et Emma Thompson dans le rôle de l’avocate Gareth Peirce..

À l’occasion de la Journée Internationale des Femmes, venez assister à la projection du documentaire Lyra réalisé par Alison Millar.

Plongez dans l’histoire de la vie et mort de Lyra McKee, une jeune auteure et journaliste prometteuse qui a été tuée par balle en Irlande du Nord alors qu’elle couvrait des émeutes. Après la projection, participez à une discussion sur les thèmes abordés dans le film.
